Keeping in Touch February 2018

Dear All

Here we are in February and here I am about to reminisce about Christmas, but as January's issue of Keeping in Touch was combined with December's this is the first chance I have.

There is no doubt that, despite colds and 'flu we managed to celebrate Christmas joyfully and faithfully in all our Churches. It truly was a great experience in every case. The Carol Services at Ingworth, Erpingham and Thwaite were absolute joys, and the Communion Services, especially the Midnights at Aldborough and Erpingham were truly inspiring. So, thank you to all who made these possible, a lot of hard work goes into the preparation of these Services and I’m very thankful for the support from so many quarters. Of course, a special thank you to all who braved the cold to come and worship - without you it just wouldn’t have worked.

On a personal note, I went down with 'flu’ after the last Service on Christmas Day and spent the next five days in bed. Without the assistance of friends and neighbours I wouldn’t have been able to cope, so very many thanks to you. You know who you are!!

Now we have the year ahead to look forward to and to plan for. God has richly blessed us in the past year and we pray he will do the same for 2018. There is a lot still to do and I wish you good fortune and every blessing for your particular walk through the coming year. There will no doubt be challenges for the Churches and challenges for individuals but that is one of the excitement of life.

Best wishes Father Paul

The Rev Canon Paul Thomas OBE

Hospice Ethiopia UK’s Annual Meeting and Presentation February 6th 2018

6pm at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, Norwich.

It’s nearly 1 year since Hospice Ethiopia UK became a registered UK charity. Our first Annual meeting will be held at Priscilla Bacon Lodge at 6pm on 6th February. Do come and hear about the amazing support the charity has had over the last 12 months and the plans for the forthcoming year. The short meeting will be followed by another opportunity to hear about Sue & Jamie’s Mumford’s trip to Addis Ababa in October 2017, with an update of the work of Hospice Ethiopia.

The presentation will be followed by refreshments. For information contact Sue Mumford  01263768699

The annual carol service was much enjoyed by a congregation of about sixty. Very much a traditional service of readings and carols led by Fr. Paul the service was enhanced by those who decorated the church, the Page family who supplied the mulled wine along with mince pies donated by several people and the choir which sang five items despite colds, coughs and sneezes!

John Postle kindly attended to the electrics by repairing light switches, providing background heating and floodlighting for the front of this lovely thatched church - a 'first' for Ingworth.

Now that St. Lawrence church is part of the Diocesan Churches Trust there are new rules governing the distribution of collections and we were unable to donate the usual 50% of the collection to the St. Martin's Housing Trust. However, separate donations collected after the service enabled us to send £100 to this very worthwhile local charity.                       I.A

Toad Patrol 2018

Can you help an amphibian cross the road? Every year volunteers turn out on damp, warm evenings between about mid-February to early April to move toads across the road at the back of Thwaite Common.

Toads return to their traditional spawning ponds on the Common in the Spring and used to get squashed by cars until the hardy band of volunteers came to the rescue. Since 2008 we have reduced mortality considerably, and last year moved 2,264 toads, 209 frogs, and nearly 200 Newts, Common, Palmate, and Great Crested.

If you could volunteer again this year, or join the rota for the first time, please come to a meeting at Hawthorn Cottage, The Street in Erpingham on Friday evening 2nd February at 20.00. New volunteers will be paired with old hands and having a rota spreads the load, the more the merrier. Any questions please call me on 01263 761350. Many thanks.  Stephen Green

Erpingham with Calthorpe WI

After the packed and exciting 2017 season we welcome the New Year with a resolution to relax and enjoy some of the simple pleasures the WI throws our way.

We are already engaged in the first of our craft activities and of course, our walking and swimming groups are enjoying the benefit of regular healthy exercise. (Cyclists too when the weather improves).

Our monthly meetings with a very varied programme of speakers continue to stimulate and inspire. Our visitors on 28th February will be talking about their spinning and weaving activities and hopefully demonstrating some simple techniques.

We already have a list of outings and visits planned for the year, and we plan to support events organised by others in the wider community by baking a cake or two. Of course we will also respond to requests from our members to take on a new challenge or activity. A WI book group is being considered and suggestions are always welcome.

We welcome new members, and invite women who are interested to see what the WI offers, to drop in as a guest to enjoy a free first meeting.

Our meetings take place in the village hall at 7.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

Pilates Classes

Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well- being. Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.

We currently have a few spaces in the Pilates Class that takes place at Erpingham with Calthorpe Village Hall on Mondays. The class starts at 9.30am until 10.20am and costs £5 per session on the door or £4 per session if an advance payment is made for 8 or more classes. Exercise mats are available to use, or bring your own. If you wish to attend please contact Diane Snelling at or just turn up (no class on 12th Feb)
